In 1931, Albert Einstein wrote a short letter of admiration to Gandhi expressing his desire to meet him in person someday but this wish remained unfulfilled.
Einstein was one of the great admirers of Gandhi. He expressed his admiration for Gandhi through a letter praising his methods of nonviolence and satyagraha. He also praised his devotion to the truth and repeatedly mentioned how he was awed by his use of non- violence to fight against injustice.
Gandhi replied to his letter very humbly thanking him for the appreciation and expressing his desire to meet him in person in his ashram in India. Einstein’s letter was originally written in German.
He said, “I believe that Gandhi’s views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil.”
