Introduction

Mahatma Gandhi on 12th January in the prayer meeting declared that he was starting a fast from next day. No one knows about his fast and got surprised hearing this. The reason behind the fast was the worse communal situations after the India Pakistan partition. It look like he was also upset with the Government's decision to withhold from Pakistan its share of the sterling balances be indebted by Britain to India after the war. Gandhi laid down seven condition to break his fast which were later agreed by all caste political leaders. They signed a pledge assuring Gandhi that the seven conditions he had stipulated would be fully met. Gandhi accepted a glass of lime juice after reassured and convinced.
