When Mohandas was in his thirteenth year he was married to Kasturba who was also of about the same age. She was the daughter of Gokuldas Makanji, a merchant of Porbandar. The wedding ceremonies were performed at Porbandar in great pomp befitting the status of the two families. Mohandas had to discontinue his education for some months to take part in the festivities that extended over a long period. The couple brought together in this child marriage started their married life immediately thereafter.
