Introduction

To protest against the British law that prohibited Indians from making their own cloth, Gandhi started spinning thread on his charkha as a part of the non- cooperation movement. He urged Indians to wear Khadi, that was cloth spun at home, rather than wearing clothes made by British textiles. He also advocated that all Indiands dedicate time to spin Khadi every day and thus participate in the movement for Independence. Gandhi further developed the non-cooperation movement by boycotting not just textiles, but all British goods.

Quotes

"I feel convinced that the revival of hand-spinning hand-weaving will make the largest contribution to the economic and the moral regeneration of India. Spinning to me is the means to establish communion with God, and Khadi is the symbol of unity of Indian humanity. Moreover, Khadi mentality means decentralization of power and the hope of the masses. It provides the golden bridge between the rich and the poor"
