Introduction

Gandhi married at the age of 13, his wife too, being of the same age. His wife, Kasturba Gandhi, is fondly known as Ba. She was also a social activist and had a great influence on Gandhi's philosophy. Gandhi once said, "I learned the lesson of non-violence from my wife". Voicing her views on the role of women in the freedom struggle, Kasturba said, "It is the women whose task it becomes to encourage the men, in our fight for freedom. Women have better understood the spirit of the fight than men".
