This was the house in Delhi which was occupied by Gandhi for the last 144 days of his life from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948 and it was here that he was assassinated.
It belonged to the Birla family who were one of the prominent industrialists of India.

History

The 12-bedroom mansion was built in 1928 by Ghanshyamdas Birla and Gandhi used to stay here whenever he was in Delhi. His associates used to visit him here.
The house saw many an important political discussions held by Gandhi with his visitors.
The Government of India purchased the Birla House from KK Birla in 1971 for a sum of Rs. 5.4 million, plus seven acres of urban land which was also given to the Birlas.

Museum

It was renamed as Gandhi Smriti and was opened to public on 15 August 1973.
It contains a number of articles which are connected with Gandhi's life and death.
It is open to visitors from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. People can take a tour of the building and grounds. They can see the room where Gandhi lived.
In the place on the grounds where Gandhi was shot, while he was on his way for the evening prayers, a Martyr's Column has been erected.
The building also has a large collection of photographs associated with Gandhi.
A very interesting exhibit is a series of small doll houses and terracotta dolls illustrating Gandhi's life.
In 2005 an Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum was established in its premises.
On all working days a multi-media show is held between 1:00 pm to 1:30pm.
