Introduction

In 1904, Gandhi established a township, namely the Phoenix settlement, near Durban. This settlement was established with the aim of applying the values of self-help, labour, dignity and simplicity, that Gandhi abided by. He did so by aiding Indian settlers to fight against injustice. This ideology that Gandhi put into practice was first used by him to fight against alcohol, to fight for the liberation of women and to protest against the exploitation of mine workers.
